Description
Once described as 'the nicest Interstate in the North East', 'a wonderful bike' this bike was featured as the example of an Interstate in the 2018 50th Anniversary of the Norton Commando exhibition at Union Garage in Brooklyn.
I am selling it now as I no longer ride and could use the space/money for other projects.
It is a 1972 Commando 750 Interstate with a combat engine (see below). All numbers match. Far from being left alone over the years the bike was extensively rebuilt and restored, down to a frame-up rebuild in 2004. All receipts for that work are shown here and included in the sale In 2017 I handed it over to a world-renowned NYC-based Norton 'guru' who looked it over from top to bottom and discovered a litany of issues overlooked in 2004. A progressively larger (and more expensive!) overhaul followed, addressing the timing/carb balancing, new steel tank and Interstate correct side panels - painting/lining by Brent at Vintage Vendor, Vermont (so, please note: NOT a fiberglass tank. That was junked. It's STEEL), new Amal 932 carbs, new Trispark electronic ignition, head strip down to clean out the gunk from the old fiberglass tank (I repeat, the tank is steel), new valves, removal, disassembly and inspection of the engine (superblend bearings were installed in the 2004 restoration: see receipts) and all new gaskets installed on reassembly (all was fine inside!), realigning timing chain/sprockets, replacement cam bushings (both, new bronze bushing, not the ‘rings'), uprated brake cylinder, drilled front brake disc, new tyres, seat cover and some other stuff I've forgotten. Invoices from this work are also shown here and included in the sale.
Anyone serious about the bike is encouraged to contact me and I'll put them in touch with my 'guru', who is aware of the sale of this bike.
Since then, it has been ridden a few times up to last summer and remains as lively as it was when the work was done by the experts, but it's time to move it on to a more appreciative owner. However, due to the excellent condition of this bike and the mechanical soundness as a result of the last major overhaul, this is not going to be a bargain hunter's bike. That doesn't mean I'm not going to be open to offers, but please do me the courtesy of keeping them realistic. Feel free to ask questions, of course. Buyers should arrange their own collection and shipping; I will do all I can to assist and expedite.
