Description
This Listing is for an incomplete 1925 Vintage BSA model B25 "Roundtank" Motorcycle project.
About 20 years ago I was restoring a more complete 1926 Roundtank bike when this frame came up for sale on eBay after being found stored in a greenhouse on an allotment in Devon. My intention was to source or make the missing parts and this would then become my next restoration project. My priorities changed when I sold my 1926 bike a few years ago and now I will never get around to restoring this one so it is offered for sale.
There are no documents or indication of its original registration number, so when it is restored an application for an age-related number would have to be made to DVLA.
The included components are frame and forks, mudguards, wheels, gearbox, and rear carrier. Hopefully my photographs give a clear indication of their condition but the following notes should also help:-
The frame, which is clearly numbered 13670, is in good condition but does have surface rusting.
The girder forks are also in good condition, although they too have surface rusting.
The original front mudguard is irreparable however, there is an accurate replica of the original which I made using a correct pattern new steel blank that was supplied by Armour Products in 2007. The mudguard has been etch primed but does need some minor fitting work before it could be painted. There are a set of new replica front and back stays for the mudguard, again supplied by Armour Products, which are still in bare metal.
The front wheel was totally rebuilt in 2008 using a new rim and stainless steel spokes. The rim was supplied by the VMCC in 2007, and was correct for its original fitment 24 x 2.25 beaded edge tyres. The cup and cone bearings were in good condition, only requiring new balls. The rim and hub were black powder coated before spoking.
The gearbox is incomplete, missing the kickstart and the clutch. The end cover screws are loose so I suspect that someone has been inside and there may be other missing or damaged parts. The gearbox is 2-speed, which indicates that the bike was the basic model rather than the deluxe that had a 3-speed box.
The rear mudguard is ragged at both ends, but otherwise is restorable. There is a surplus section, left over from from the new front mudguard blank, that could be used to effect a good repair with some neat welding. Alternatively, the original front mudguard could be the source of a sound repair section.
The rear wheel is in bits but is complete. The hub needs the cup and cone bearings replaced before the wheel could be rebuilt. There is an included correct new beaded edge rim, again supplied by the VMCC in 2007. The original wheel rim is unusable but is included as a pattern for drilling the spoke holes in the new rim. The brake rim is rusty but useable. The chain sprocket is quite worn. As I did with the front wheel, my intention was to have the rear wheel rebuilt with stainless spokes.
The rear carrier is incomplete as someone has cut out sections of the hollow tubes however, enough remains for it to be restored if the correct diameter tubing could be sourced and you can weld.
The main missing components are handlebars & controls, its round petrol tank and hand oiler, its tool box, its Brookes pan saddle, its 2.49 hp side valve engine and ancillaries, its clutch, its exhaust, its chainguards, its brake parts and its rear stand. I have seen most of these missing parts coming up for sale on eBay over the last few years but at the time I either didn't have the funds to buy them or was outbid. Replica exhaust systems, tool boxes and rear stands are available now and again.
So, if you fancy restoring a 100 year old motorcycle and have the patience to wait for the missing parts or, perhaps already have most of them, then this is a worthwhile project.
The sale is only open to UK buyers and I request that payment is made either in cash upon collection or by bank transfer. I wont release the frame until funds have cleared.
I've set a price that ensures I get back what I paid for the new wheel rims, the front wheel rebuild, the new front mudguard and stays etc.
Because of its size and weight etc. it is only available for personal collection from my home in Hawes, North Yorkshire. A weekend collection would be preferred although I can be flexible. All of the bolts in the frame have been loosened so it will reduce to manageable parts that would fit into a hatchback car.
