1955 Triumph T110style special 650cc, excellent runner with V5C doc.
Before the resurgence in interest in Classic British bikes which really got underway big time in the late 70's early 80's, the old British iron had become pretty worthless and undesirable. However, there were still plenty of die-hard Brit-bike enthusiasts out there who would build bikes up cheaply and to their own liking as had been the way all through the sixties and the golden era of the café racer. This Triumph is a typical example of that culture. Built with no regard for originality, just put together well, probably on a budget to make a pretty cool “Trophy look-a-like” and an every-day practical machine.
This bike is a good starter, recent rebuilt (Tony Cooper) magneto. (It is quite high compression though and not for the faint hearted, no centre stand just a sidestand makes it more awkward to be honest). It sounds great mechanically and doesn't smoke. It pulls like a train and goes as well as many a TR6.
Gears and clutch are all good.
Brakes are excellent especially the twin leading shoe front one of course.
The bike handles nicely and has a good comfortable riding position. Speedo is a modern repro which reads as per kmh rather than mph. Must be incorrect ration for the gearbox drive. I suppose you could calibrate it with some external marks for 30, 40, 60 or swap for a chronometric. Charging system is on 12Volt. An old conversion by the looks of it with a standard period rectifier and two zener diodes! It's working very well and lights are great. Horn & brake light also work ok.
The bike comes with a V5C doc. Registration is FSL638 (cannot be transferred to another vehicle). Frame number 67154, engine number T110 D107 both match V5C and are genuine Triumph factory stampings.
The bike is registered as a Historic Vehicle so road tax is free and it is MOT exempt.
Cosmetically the bike is presentable but not mint. It's a rider's type bike not a show piece. The enamel on the frame is sound but quite old looking. Good enamel on tank and toolbox although there is some orange peel on the oil tank. Tank paint job is really good and the tank is very clean inside and has not been linered or petsealed. Both wheel rims are flanged Akront alloys in good condition. Spokes are dull plated type in clean condition. Front tyre is hardly used Dunlop Arrowmax, rear is Avon Road runner, about 50% worn. Mudguards are stainless. Exhaust system is in good tidy condition. Seat is nice.
There is no fin damage on the engine. Sidestand is in good order. All in all this is a great old Triumph either to ride “as is” or to improve one way or another. If I was keeping it myself I would probably fit lower compression pistons and a centre stand (the lugs are intact on the bottom rails). I would probably opt for a modern 12v rectifier / regulator to replace the ugly zener diodes as well! Don't miss this mechanically sound strong running 650 Triumph an ideal “everyday all weather” classic Brit.
