Description
1924 Triumph SD, 500cc good project with V5C.
Here is a fabulous 500cc Triumph SD project from 1924. It basically looks mostly complete and in pretty good all round condition. Probably a recommissioning job rather than total restoration required to get to a good 102 year old “old bike” standard.
The engine is complete and turns over very nicely, sounds good and feels good with compression. The mag has no spark so I haven't tried to get the bike running. All three gears select nicely. No handlebar controls, some cables missing, footrests missing, fuel lines etc but this bike is mostly complete and mostly very original looking. I don't think it would take too much to sort out.
The bike comes with an up to date V5C doc. Registration number is WC1744 (cannot be transferred to another vehicle).
Frame number is 335960, engine number is 99584. It is of course registered as a Historic Vehicle therefore free road tax and MOT exempt.
Cosmetically the bike is not too bad. It doesn't need to be restores, a comprehensive recommissioning job should be adequate especially if you like your 102 year old bikes to look old! The enamel on the frame is pretty decent but old and marked of course. The tank is some form of primer but looks generally to be in good condition. The oil tank portion looks like it needs a good clean out. The petrol side looks pretty clean and has not been linered. The oil pump in the tank feels good.
Wheels & spokes seem all good with decent old enamel. Tyres look to have been replaced in recent times, they are Cheng Shin beaded edge type and are practically unused looking. The handlebars have been expertly welded by a local welder. He says the weld is now the strongest part of the bars! I've tested them with my body weight, no problem. Mudguards are pretty good, especially the rear. The front may have had work in the past and currently has a couple of minor splits so some remedial repairs required here at some point. Rear stand is in very good order. Saddle is very nice. Exhaust system looks sound. Carb looks good and slides are free.
All in all this is a great opportunity to reawaken a lovely vintage Triumph. The Sprung Drive (S.D.) Model was a big step forward and is a popular choice for vintage class enthusiasts. Don't miss this amazing 102 year old Triumph! Selling as a good project.
