Okay folks,
Over 1,000 people have viewed this listing with over 200 watchers...so there must be some interest in this bike. So, here is the deal: I am reducing the original asking price from $34,000.00 to $23,500.00. This is as low as it will go. There is no room for offers or negotiations. I know the motorcycle market is soft right now...I just bought a perfect 2000 Springer Softail for less than $5,000.00, so yeah, the market is a little soft. Having said that, if no one purchases this bike for my asking price of $23,500.00 in the next fourteen days, I'm just going to keep it and put it in storage. I may or may not offer it for sale again. I'm old, and tired so I have no interest in hawking this bike until I am 80. So if you want it, $23,500.00 takes it and not a dime less. Thanks for your attention. This 1947 Indian Chief Motorcycle is presented for sale by the current owner, Mark D. Clark.
The bike was acquired by its present owner from the grandson of the original owner. According to the original owner, the bike has lived its entire life in or around Roanoke, VA and was purchased in Roanoke.
The bike was restored to factory specifications by the son of the original owner in 1998 and won Senior First Place in the Antique Motorcycle Division of the Antique Automobile Club of America in 1999. No work other than maintenance items, plugs, bulbs, etc. has been done since that time.
The bike is in excellent mechanical and cosmetic condition and should be considered a Condition 2 (FINE) – “Excellent restored condition or highly preserved original with minor blemishes” and is approximately 90% original, including the engine, frame, fuel tank, fenders, handlebars, seat pan, lights, front and rear suspension, etc.
It is painted with single-stage Dupont Paint per original factory color. It is a Matching Numbers bike. The carburetor was recently cleaned and new float installed, along with a new Gel 6 Volt Battery that is inside the reproduction battery box. The tires and tubes were replaced in 2021, and the wheel bearings were repacked at that time as well.
The bike has not been started in approximately two years but should start with minor adjustments and/or maintenance. Upon request, the current owner will show the new owner the starting sequence, however this is not a guarantee the bike will start at that time. It should be noted that this is a “kick-start” motorcycle and heat, humidity, and other factors can impact the ease of starting the motor.
The bike has a three-speed transmission with a foot-actuated clutch, and a hand operated spark advance. These can also be reviewed with the current owner after purchase. There is only one key. The air cleaner, air cleaner cover and misc. hardware is included, but had been removed for carb maintenance when the photos were taken. The air cleaner cover, etc., is original to the bike.

All-in-all this 1947 Indian Chief is a very fine, rideable example of a world-class motorcycle. It is capable of speeds up to 85 – 90 mph and handles better than most modern motorcycles. The current owner holds clear title which will be transferred to the buyer within 72 hours of clearance of purchase funds.

Note: I broke my back recently and do not have the ability to kick-start this bike anymore. If I did, I would not be considering parting with it. That is also the primary reason it has not been started recently.
