Description
This is a very original and unmolested example of a Norton Big 4 which is a 600cc side valve single and the bigger brother to the more well known 16H model which is 500cc. This particular bike comes with a current V5C. It also has its original log book and this shows that the bike is on its original registration. but it is none transferable. It also shows that the numbers are matching and the new log book has the bike down as historic. so it will be tax and MOT free. In the file there is also the last tax and MOT certificate which is from 1975 which is the last time this bike was on the road apparently.
So. the bike its self is very scruffy and very original with all correct original tinware and fitments. It starts and runs really well. it sits and ticks over nicely and there is no undue smoke or rattles from the engine. I am going to put a new battery on it. but even with whats on. the lights come on and brighten up nicely when you rev the bike. demonstrating a good healthy charge. It has long road holder forks fitted and has a rigid back end. It would look miles better with a single seat fitted. but that duel seat is a correct period after market accessory and has the Feridax badge on. so is a decent period seat anyway. Looking around the bike. its nice to note it has its correct Lucas Altette horn fitted which still works as well as its original Smiths chronometric speedometer. Easy bits to remove and so often missing from projects these days. It even has a little hand pump on the chain guard. It has solid levers and the little speedo surround that's often missing as well as the original bakelite damper knob. Its got its original tank fitted and all the tinware is scruffy. but correct. original and solid. Its the half width hub wheels fitted which is right for this period. So. although this bike is as scruffy as hell. it is all original. all correct (apart from the twin seat ) its all fairly solid. not rusted through and its appears to be all working as well as ever. Its amazing for its age and for the time its been standing. The oil returns alright and the clutch and gears appear to operate alright. The tyres even seem to have passable tread. Even the paperwork is all ship shape and correct. So. I think that this is a bit of a rough diamond. Its much better than it looks because its been laid up for so long and not been got too yet by the bling brigade. When it was laid up in 1975. it would just have been just another old British bike and not considered particularly valuable or worth restoring I guess. That 40 odd year lay up has preserved it in many respects. So. this is your opportunity to own a real time warp bike. It had clearly been used as it was meant to be used for the first 23 years of its life. probably with minimal maintenance and minimal messing about and then it was laid up probably when its was no longer needed. it might be that the engine has never even been down. which might account for how sweet it is. So this is a very original very scruffy old bike that is ideal to use as is or to restore to its former glory.
Viewing is welcome. Collection is preferred. although I can arrange delivery within the mainland UK by courier for around £100.
