Description
1960 Velocette Venom 500cc, excellent runner, V5C original reg.
Here is a very good useable example of one of the top British singles, the Velocette Venom. These bikes were hand built in smaller numbers than other makes and have a fine reputation for quality of engineering as well as performance and style.
This example has clearly been a “riders' bike”. It has been in regular use but has not covered terrific mileages in recent years.
It is very easy to start, just follow the usual Velo procedure and it's easy.
The engine sounds great. Crisp and clean running, quiet mechanically and no smoke. Acceleration is brisk, this bike is nicely bedded in and really wants to go. Gearbox and clutch are spot on.
Handling is superb and braking is excellent. The Smith's 120mph speedometer is working well and the charging system is working well. (The ammeter is not reliable but the lights brighten when revved and even work with no battery connected.)
The bike comes with V5C doc. It has original transferable registration 895 TNO, date of registration is 10th May 1960 when is was sold through Grays of London. Frame number RS14692, Engine number MSS 12520 (has had change of crankcases). These numbers match the V5c doc. I have double checked that the bike was originally a Venom and factory records confirm this according to Grove Classics.
The bike is of course registered as an Historic Vehicle therefore road tax is free and MOT is not required.
Cosmetically the bike is in really “honest” used condition. The enamel on the frame is decent. Obviously showing signs of use and age here and there.
The front rim has very poor chrome and dull original spokes and nipples. Front tyre is and excellent, hardly used Avon Road Runner.
Rear rim quite good genuine Dunlop with decent dull original spokes and nearly new Avon Road Runner tyre.
Exhaust down pipe has dulled its chrome, silencer is quite good. Seat is in decent condition.
All alloy engine has no fin damage.
Good side-stand and good centre stands fitted.
Paint chipped badly on rear chain-guard.
All in all this is a sound useable Venom, on the road and ready to ride and enjoy.
An ideal winter classic or possible candidate for full or partial restoration.
Don't miss this super British 500cc single.
Selling as a good, ready to ride runner!
