For auction here is a pretty rare 1949 Royal Enfield J2 model. which is a 500cc overhead valve twin port single. This was effectively Royal Enfields flagship model after the war with the chrome tank and twin port pipes. This bike has its V5C present. and is on an age related none transferrable number. The log book has the bike as historic and there is 12 months tax on the bike. The tax is free and it is MOT exempt.
The bike its self has recently been restored and now needs one or two very minor items to finish. which I shall describe shortly. But. the bike its self. starts easily and runs well. it all lights up. its got new tyres and the brakes are good. I have ridden it around the yard here to check the gears and clutch etc and all that works perfectly. in fact the clutch is very light comparitively speaking and theres no horrid crunching or graunching of gears when you select a gear indicating that the clutch and gearbox are all set up OK. Theres no undue smoke or noises from the engine either.
The bike has been restored using a lot of the original items. so for example. they are the original wheels and rims that have been blasted and powder coated. The original tank was refurbed at great costs also. It has its original Chronometric Smiths Speedometer which was also refurbished etc. This bike has had a lot of money spent on it to get it to this stage.
Basically. I. say that this bike has been 95% finished. The things that are missing or need doing that I can see are as follows:
1: There are some little caps you can buy to cover the fork top nuts. There missing. Easily available from Hitchcocks apparantly.
2: Theres no rear stand fitted at present. its just on a prop stand. so I think it wants a rear stand fitting ideally.
3: I couldn. see that it was charging today. lthough I believe it has been. so it probably wants the regulator box flicking or something.
4: As you can see from the pictures. the paint on the chaincase has cracked / crazed. I. told it was painted when it was too cold or its reacted with something. so ideally. this needs repainting but its not critical.
5: Its probably just a detail. but I think it could also do with numbers putting on the front number plate to make it look more finished.
Thats about it. The rest of it is running and bedding in issues. Its not been used since restoration as its been waiting for registration. so its now looking for a rider and someone to more or less finish it off. Those issues aside this is a very smart looking bike. The tank was properly refurbed and the paintwork on the bike in general is good. Clearly its a new exhaust system. so the bling is pretty good. You could put new rims on if you wanted to increase the bling. but they are the original rims and they look pretty smart as they are.
So. in summary. this is a pretty rare model. the top of the range Royal Enfield from 1949. the 500cc J2 twin port. Its registered. its running good. its probably 95% restored and its now ready to ride and finish off. The engine is good. the bike is pretty sound and its an ideal bike to take to shows or local runs etc. This bike is also nice and low set being a rigid. so may suit the not so tall rider.
