1950 Norton ES2, 500cc, matching engine / frame, V5C.
Here is a very solid, good running example of the popular post-war Norton, the ES2 500cc single. A real traditional British 500cc single in good useable but not restored condition.
The ES2 has been launched as a top of the OHV range model in the late 20's and it continued to be produced over the following four decades in differing forms. This relatively early post-war model still has its original engine & frame. It starts easily and sounds fantastic. No knocks or rattles but you do get some smoke in exhaust at first on a cold engine. Also the bike, like most Nortons does tend to “wet sump” over time. Most owners go down the route of fitting a tap in the feed line to prevent this but it's easy to drain & replace the oil.
The bike rides really well, pulls like a train all gears are good and clutch is good. Charging system is working properly and lights are good. Smith's speedometer is also working well. Brakes are good and handling is good all round.
The bike comes with an up to date V5C doc. Registration is XXG 690 (cannot be transferred to another vehicle). Frame number is D4-24410, engine number also D4-24410. Date of registration is 17/01/1950. It is registered as a Historic Vehicle, therefore road tax is free and it is MOT exempt.
Cosmetically the bike is typical old bike condition. It still looks good but on close inspections age and patina are creeping in. The frame has good enamel / powder coat on frame in mostly good condition but there are marks chips and scratches and signs of use, especially on the lower rails. Mudguards, toolbox have very good quality enamel still in very presentable but used condition. Tank is obviously a new Indian made replacement but it fits perfectly and I would say it's pretty hard to tell it from a genuine one apart of course for the shiny “too good to be original” condition! Front wheel rim has poor chrome, spokes are dull old plated type. Front tyre is very good hardly used Avon SM MKII ribbed. Rear rim also has very poor chrome and the spokes have been blackened. Rear tyre is an Avon SM MKII and is unused looking. Seat is in good condition. Exhaust system is very good but chrome has dulled. Top fin of barrel has had a repair. There is some oil around the engine including a drip from the timing chest but it's not too bad. Just a drip or too after a run, nothing out of the ordinary for an old Brit! Good centre stand is very easy to use, there is no sidestand currently fitted. All in all a great ready to use 500cc trad British single. Not fully restored and as always with the old Brits will require regular routine maintenance but it is in good useable condition. Selling as a good unrestored runner.
